"Birth of a Keaton, Pt. 2" is the eighteenth episode in the third season of the NBC family sitcom Family Ties. It originally aired on January 31, 1985, and is the sixty-second episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
While everyone is at Steven's PBS telethon, he is at home for plumbing issues. As Elyse sings on the air, she goes into labor. With snowstorm complications, Elyse gives birth at the television station as Steven races to get back in time.
Plot[]
Everyone has trouble getting to the hospital because of the snow. Elyse realizes that she will have to give birth at WKS (and the ratings couldn't be better!). Unfortunately, the only doctor available to help is a PhD botanist. Andrew Keaton joins the family (much to Alex's delight).

Trivia[]
- The title is a play on the movie "Birth of a Nation".
- Parts of this episode are used as a flashback in "The American Family".
- In Part II, while Skippy and the plumber are talking on the couch, look outside the window right behind them. The snowstorm is really fierce and the light outside looks odd.
- Jennifer is wearing a Duran Duran watch. (very 1980s)
- John Hancock reprises his role as Gus Thompson.
- The kids and later Steven break into the WKS jingle.
- Elyse sings "Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms", a very popular tune, and misses the high note like everyone in cartoons and comedies do. (Think Bugs Bunny on the xylophone)
- The comedian breaks out in "Having My Baby" as Elyse heads for the hospital.
