"Checkmate" is the sixteenth episode in the fourth season of the NBC family sitcom Family Ties. It originally aired on January 30, 1986, and is the eighty-fourth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Alex faces off against a Russian opponent in a college chess tournament; Ivan makes a move that is an obvious attempt to throw the game.
Plot[]
Alex, the Leland Chess Champion, has the opportunity to play Chess, first with a computer and then against a visiting Russian champion, Ivan Rozmirovich (played by Albert Macklin) - (see video 2). It appears that Ivan is trying to throw the match, so Alex attempts to match him bad move for bad move.
