"Death of a Grocer" is the ninth episode in the first season of the NBC family sitcom Family Ties. It originally aired on December 1, 1982, and is the ninth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Alex leaves his job at a small grocery store for an ultra-modern supermarket.
Plot[]
Alex is working at Adler's Grocery (as he presumably did in "Summer of '82"). Mr. Adler (played by Jack Somack) is getting older and seems unconcerned about the business, while Alex keeps encouraging him with ways to improve the grocery (that mostly fall on deaf ears). Skippy tells Alex there is an opening at the new modern supermarket in town, but Alex expresses his happiness at his current job. Later, however, Alex goes to the supermarket for an interview. Alex struggles to tell Mr. Adler about his job change.
As time passes, Alex is unsatisfied by his move and asks for his old job back.

Trivia[]
- One of the customers at Adler's is a very familiar character actor, William G. Schilling.
- From the episode title, one might expect Mr. Adler to die, he doesn't. Strangely, Jack Somack did pass away less than a year after the episode aired.
- The title could possibly be a play on "Death of a Salesman".
- Though made almost ten years later, an episode of The Wonder Years ("The Hardware Store") bears a great resemblance to this one.
