Doug is Alex P. Keaton's best friend.
Background[]
When Doug was a kid, he lost a skate key and spent three weeks sleeping in his skates. He's a regular at poker nights, which as of Best Man are hosted at Alex's house instead of Neil's apartment. Alex advises Doug during each game. After the games, Doug helps Alex clean up, and then they watch a movie together.
On the series[]
Doug drives Alex to Leland University and attends Ephraim Bronski's seminar with him during Alex's first year of college. In Little Man on Campus, Doug writes a paper that gets the only A in Professor Bronski's class.
In Best Man, Doug woos Eleanor Lee by walking backwards in front of her as she walks home from school, calling her "Amore mio" and tossing flowers at her feet. Eleanor is confused, but it apparently works, because she starts going out with him. Doug has never met a girl like her before, and before long they're engaged. Doug invites Alex to be his best man, but Alex disapproves of their relationship, and the two get in a big argument, during which Alex declares that he won't be going to the wedding. Doug makes Lyle his best man instead. Alex eventually shows up at the wedding and gives Doug his blessing, after which Doug makes him the best man instead of Lyle.
After the wedding, Doug and Eleanor move into an apartment together. Doug isn't bringing in any money besides what he makes recycling cans, but Eleanor is rich and can support both of them.
Personality[]
Doug is book smart but has a childish personality and lacks common sense. Alex helps him through daily life, but after he gets married, Eleanor takes over that role.
Trivia[]
His favorite movie is True Grit, until he sees Yentl with Eleanor and decides that that's his new favorite movie.
He has a knapsack of personal treasures that includes aluminum cans, wind-up dinosaurs, pictures of Sergio Franchi, and the Smith-Smith page in the phonebook.
