Synopsis[]

When Steven's father arrives for a visit, it results in the two clashing as usual. His father reveals some important news that causes Steven to question their entire relationship.

Plot[]

Steven's father Jake (played by John Randolph) is coming for a visit. They've fought in the past, so Steven assembles a list of acceptable topics of conversation, and even those fail. At a moment of high tension, Jake reveals that he is dying. The two later have an impassioned conversation about their ideological differences, and make some peace, but each realizes, far too late in life.

Trivia[]

  • Steven and his father replay the famous "Tastes Great. Less Filling" debate about Lite Beer (so common in the 1980s).
  • Alex (of course) mentions Richard Nixon, to which his grandfather replies, "Nixon. One of the greatest" (in obvious opposition to Steven and Elyse's feelings).
  • In "Remembrances of Things Past", Jake has died and Steven is dealing with his feelings for his father. (see also "Heartstrings (Part II)")
  • The title is a play on the title of the 1970 movie 'I Never Sang for My Father"
