Background[]
Ian is a former Alpha Phi Epsilon member. A few years ago he separated from his wife and started seeing a number of other women, including Karen Nicholson. He told Karen he loved her and asked her to marry him. When Karen found out he wasn't faithful to her, she left him. Months later, Karen talked to Ian again. He said he'd call her tomorrow, but didn't contact her for the next three months.
On the series[]
Ian meets Alex P. Keaton, who wants to join Alpha Phi Epsilon. Ian considers Alex a promising prospect, until Alex brings Karen to a fraternity dance as his date. Ian tells Karen he still loves her and wants to spend his next birthday with her, but Karen says she never wants to see him again. The two get in an argument that attracts the attention of everyone else at the party before Karen storms out.
