Joseph Simmons is a resident of the retirement center run by Mrs. Clark.
Background[]
Joseph was previously married to an unnamed woman. The two of them were the parents of David Simmons. When David was seven, Joseph bought him a bicycle, a fact Joseph still likes to bring up in arguments. After Joseph's wife died, the now elderly Joseph moved in with David, now an adult. Joseph and David didn't get along, so Joseph moved into the retirement center. David continued to visit him every Thursday. After Joseph had been there for some time, he met Eva Martin and fell in love with her at first sight, although he still thinks about his first wife every day.
On the series[]
Joseph and Eva strike up a friendship with Andrew Keaton, who likes to visit the retirement center. Steven Keaton decides to film a documentary about Andy's friendship with the retirees. Joseph proposes to Eva on camera. However, David is adamantly opposed to the idea of Joseph remarrying. Joseph wants to have David's blessing, but since David refuses to give it, Joseph and Eva decide to ignore him. They get married at the Keaton family's house. David arrives during the ceremony, tells Joseph that he's changed his mind, and congratulates him on his marriage. Joseph makes him his best man.
