Leland Heights is the name of the Keaton family's neighborhood. When the Keatons first moved in, the neighborhood was fairly diverse. When Mallory Keaton was a little girl, she was friends with a black girl down the street named Maggie who asked her why she had white skin. The only explanation Mallory could come up with was that she bathed with ivory soap. Over the years, the neighborhood gradually became less diverse. As of the neighborhood meeting in Have Gun, Will Unravel, there was still at least one black family, but by Season 7, everyone there is white. When Gus and Maya Thompson move in, their home is the target of racist harassment and vandalism from one or more people who think the presence of a black family will drive down property values.[1][2]
Leland Heights is located in a school district of the same name, which includes Harding High School. It's two miles from the Columbus school district.[3]
