Background[]
Paul has been working with Elyse Keaton for a year, ever since she returned from maternity leave after having Andrew Keaton. During that time, he has fallen madly in love with her. He fantasizes about taking her on a six-week summer trip through Europe.
On the series[]
Paul confesses his feelings to Ray, then Steven Keaton. Then he decides to quit working at the firm, because his feelings for Elyse are too distracting. Elyse confronts him as he's packing his things from their office. Paul denies his feelings for her at first, but as he's filling her in on the work he's leaving, he tries to kiss her. Then he flees the office. Later that day, he goes to the Keaton family's house to apologize to Elyse for his earlier behavior and confess his love to her. He tells her that he's leaving the country. Elyse suggests that he doesn't really love her, but something she represents to him. Paul admits that she has a point. He agrees to keep working at the firm, but tells Elyse not to lean over his shoulder at work anymore.
