Paul and Alex went to high school together. The night of the prom, they snuck down and watched people load money into the ATMs. Paul went to Leland University, where he and Alex co-won the Newman Award for excellence in undergraduate economics. He got hired at $45,000 a year by Dunn and Bradley, the biggest investment banking firm in Ohio.

Paul gives Alex's resume to the hiring committee at Dunn and Bradley. Alex gets an interview with Jessica Foster, who is so impressed with him that she not only hires Alex but also fires Paul for not being money-obsessed enough. Alex apologizes to Paul, but Paul says that he was probably on the way out anyway. However, Alex feels guilty and quits on his first day. When Paul finds out, he tells Alex to call Ms. Foster to try to get his job back, but Alex refuses. Paul says he thinks he has a shot at a job at Hughes-Simpson.
