Background[]
Terry was fresh out of architecture school when Elyse Keaton got him his first job at the architectural firm where she worked. Elyse then quit to have Andrew Keaton, but months later, Terry brought her in part-time to consult on a project.
Terry's girlfriend, Suzanne, recently broke up with him. Terry is devastated and doesn't think he's ready to start dating again, because another rejection would kill him.

Elyse Keaton sets Terry up with Liz Obeck. Terry thinks Liz is the greatest girl he's ever met. After their first evening together at the Keaton family's house, they go out for a drink and stay out until three in the morning. Liz goes with Terry to a staff party at the architectural firm, where Elyse breaks the news to Terry that Liz already has a boyfriend, not knowing that Liz is planning to break up with him. Terry flees the party. That evening, Terry and Liz both go back to the Keatons' house, where Liz tells Terry that she wasn't just leading him on, and Terry tells Liz that he still wants to see her. The two go to Guido's to talk it out.
