"The Last of the Red Hot Psychologists, Pt. 1" is the first episode in the sixth season of the NBC family sitcom Family Ties. It originally aired on September 13, 1987, and is the hundred-and-twenty-third episode of the series overall.

Synopsis[]

A student in psychology selects Alex for a research project that aims to analyse overachievers and becomes romantically involved with him while she works on her paper.

Plot[]

Andy goes to his first day of kindergarten and Jennifer goes to her first day of high school.  Alex meets Lauren Miller (played by Courteney Cox), a psychology major at Leland College, who is conducting a study of overachievers. Despite some initial bumps, the two become close.

  • First appearance of Courteney Cox as Lauren Miller.
  • For the first time since the episode Starting Over in season 5 Alex talks more about his breakup from Ellen.
  • Alex got a dance scholarship to go to Paris along with Ellen but didn't go with her.
  • Parts of this episode are used as flashbacks in "Wrap Around the Clock".
  • First appearance of 1987 Paramount Television logo.
  • Elyse reports that Alex's kindergarten teacher's name was "Mrs. McGovern".  This clashes with reports in other episodes: "Remembrances of Things Past" and "Sign of the Times".
  • Steven uses the term "gnarly" (probably learned in the most recently-aired episode - "It's My Party").  Interestingly, had those old episodes not been aired, there would not have been such a nice segue into this episode.
  • Pictures on their walls growing up - Lauren's friends:  David Cassidy and John Travolta; Lauren: Sigmund Freud; Alex's friends: Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett; Alex: Pat Nixon.
